View Full Version : Jungle Emperor Leo, the movie

I just finished my second viewing of this film, which is very much like Disney's Bambi, but also contains a fantasy scene that seems straight out of Dr. Suess' mind. I would really like to see the series and the manga, but for now, this must Suffice.

Charaters who make brief appearances include Lamp, Hyoutan-Tsugi, and Atom. Lamp is very easy to spot, with that candle on his head, Hyoutan-Tsugi, is not so hard either. But, I barely noticed Atom, and had to rewind just to make sure.

I do not know about the manga, but this movie had the boy cub Lune (lune- ay) being sold into a circus and working in a trapeze act! I think I have seen something like this before!

As much as I normally prefer the original Japanese audio, this one works better with the English Dub. :wahah:

:D  ;) I do not know how I fogot about this detail:

The cub Lune in his time in the circus, tries to defend an elephant from the trainer who is whipping her. Just as the trainer is about to turn the lash toward the cub, a pretty, young, trapeze performer intervenes, and saves him. I do not know if this was in the manga the certainly would have preceded the 80s Astroboy series, but I do know that no such event (based upon the timing in the cub's life) occurred in Kimba TWL. As I have only seen the 1st season of Kimba, I do not know whether the 2nd season had anything like it. I, not knowing any differently, suspect that this scene was influenced by Astroboy's own experience with Kathy (80s series). Moreover, not only do both women save the little guys from the lash, but both release them from bondage in the circus! :D

Astro was hidden in that movie? I didn't see him. ;^^ On what part of the movie was he in?

There were many Hyoutan-Tsugi hidden about. It reminded me of a "Where's Waldo?" book. ;^^

I rented it from NETFLIX, but amazon.com also has it. it has Dolby Digital both sub and dub.

I would not have noticed atom, myself, if I had not paused the movie at just the point where the circus audience is rising from its seats, straining to see the lion on the trapeze. Atom is in the lower right corner. Just look for his characteristic "V" shape on his forehead. Because the background is dark, you will not notice his points. He is only in about 5 frames.

I only noticed the label on the can from which Mustachio's companion was eating. You say there were more?

Saw him! ^_^ I think Uran is right beside him, off screen because I also see a half of a "crescent moon". (I had to use the brightness on my TV to see that. ;^^)

The number of those pig creatures I found was 6. (I found more after I looked for Astro.) Maybe there are more... I'll list them according to the time on the video.

1- 6 mins 19 sec. In the lower left-hand side of a man's newspaper.
2- 35 mins 29-31 sec. On the bottom of the screen.
3- 42 mins 8-10 sec. The tall, blue clown (the head only).
4- 42 mins 45-48 sec. Lower right-hand courner of the screen. In back of a boy.
5- 42 mins 49-50 sec. Guy on the upper left-hand area has many of them and throws them.
6- 56 mins 48-53 sec. On a food can.

Haruka-chan, it costs about $20. Anything higher than that price is a rip-off. Remember. ^^

Yeah, I see her. Check the 2nd and 3rd frames:

You can see the top of her noggin here, but her curl is in front of a dark background.

Look between Atom's cheek and the man's neck tie.

I am issuing a challenge:

Find Atom in any other Tezuka anime. I am esp interested in finding him in Metropolis. I realize that this will be very difficult, if he is a well-hidden as he was in Jungle Emperor.

Make no mistake about it, I will not be taking this challenge myself. I will be working on my Astroboy manga web pages, trying to identify other actors who appear in them. Lamp, Duke Red, & several others are sufficiently unique in their appearance, as to be easy to spot. However, Spica's face is similar to many female faces, & I want to know which one, if any portrays her (vol. 22, Astro Returns).

Yeah, I've seen Jungle Emperor Leo a couple times and have mixed feelings about it. The whole circus business (and in fact almost everything with Lune) didn't feel particularly well executed to me. I'm stuck in the same boat everyone else is--namely, without the Jungle Emperor manga to read, its hard to know if this is how Tezuka originally wrote it or is more of an Astro homage. I think parts of this film are absolutely amazing, but in its totality, it isn't a FANTASTIC film. Still, watching this together with the Kimba set is about the closest we're going to get right now to grasping the whole story arc.

Nobody mentioned grasshoppers until (cybotron @ Dec 8 2004, 09:01 AM). Prior to that, Blackjack, Pinoko, etc, were discussed by me, (Dec 8 2004, 11:10 AM) & (80's astro @ Dec 5 2004, 04:11 AM). Just look @ the innermost quote, it says nothing about grasshoppers.

Queensland and the hands of God had been mentioned.... Such astute observations.... Such sightful boys.
