Serial Experements Lain
Saber Marionette J
All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku

I'd be happy to list some other good ones if anyone's interested since 10 for each category is very limiting.
BTW, for an otaku, you seem not to have seen many anime... you should maybe try harder unless you make up for it with video games or body odour :P

I am not going to post a top 10 as that is just way too hard.
I would like to comment on a few shows mentioned already tho.. I hope thats ok.
Naussiccaa In the Valley of The Wind was a fantastic movie. I used to rent that and another (american-style) animated morie out of a little corner video store all the time. I have been trying to track both those movies down for purchase for over 10 years now. The other Movie was STARCHASER the Legend of Orin.
Spirited Away is also a fantastic movie. This was the first Anime movie I ever bought on DVD. I managed to snag one of those limited collectors edition ones. My collection of Anime is still very small on both DVD and VHS as to be honest it is just way too expensive and difficult to get here in Australia, or at least where I live in Australia.
I would also like to mention here that both Star Blazers (the version of Yamato that was released here in Australia) is actually a legal downloadable series now, as is Mysterious Cities of Gold. Apparently it has something to to with the copyright for these two show being killed due to no one owns them anymore or something like that. Its legal mumbo jumbo, so I do not understand how it works. If you type them into Google tho you will find PLENTY of hits for where to freely and openly and legally download them.

I bought a copy of Gunsmith Cats because I read about its story and extras. Too bad I was suckered into a bootleg that had no extras. The story itself was worthwhile, but I prefer funny titles:
1. Colorful: my number one pick, it is rather risque, being about losers trying to sneak a peek at girls' panties, but it is absolutely the funniest thing I have ever seen, because of the consequnces and strained facial expressions as they try to stretch for the peek.
I could not order the following in terms of funniest to least funny.
2. Fist of the North Star. extremely violent, but unbelievably b-movie-style of killing, I could not stop laughing, it was just too dumb.
3. Mahoromatic. Funny and also fan service. Sexual fantasies are rather graphic, though.
4. Nuku Nuku (OAV, not Dash) funny
5. Tetsuwan Atumu (new (Japanese Language),old, older, manga) funny because kids are so cute.
6. Excel Saga. However, I must learn more about Japanese culture to undrestand Excel's puns.
7. Martian Successor Nadesico/ and its spinoff, Gekiganger 3. The crew of the Nedesico enjoy watching the old anime, Gekiganger 3, and hence the spinoff. Quite funny! I will need to see if I should move this higher in the list, because it is quite funny.
8. Photon is also quite funny, but does have some rather offensive sexual content, even though that particular part of the body is hidden behind a censor's black dot, I found the one scene rather gross.
9. Dirty Pair/ Burn Up/ Plastic Little/ and others with goofy slapstick-style humor, massive destruction, and fan-service.
10. Wild Arms. It has the cutest little vampire I have ever seen!
I will post my favorite movies later.

I saw Hellsing on somebody's list. I watched this on the Action Channel, but missed a week, so I rented a disk. I actually liked the dubbed version better, I think the Brit accents made the difference.
Speaking of Hellsing, I just received the first graphic novel. It goes from right to left, except for the text itself.

Just a few questions and comments about what has been mentioned so far people..
Gunsmith Cats
- I saw this series (all three eps) when they showed it on SBS (foreign language channel here in Australia for you who arent from here) and really enjoyed it. I have heard some pretty positive things about the DVD packaging of this too. Of course the Manga this was based on does not really sound like my sort of thing (not into the whole Japaneese concept of pairing old men with little girls) but the Anime was quite good.
Colorful:
This sort of Anime is something I cant get enough of. The 'unconventional' manner in wich Japan can take subjects like this and make them both tragic and pathetic yet hilariously funny always gets me. I have never even heard of this series so I assume it is not available here in Oz. Pity.
Fist of the North Star.
This is one of the few Anime I have seen that I could't actually find something in there I liked. Not the WORST Anime I have seen as it wasnt 'bad' but I found it amazingly bland and uninteresting.
Mahoromatic, Photon, Nuku Nuku
Heve not heard of these titles. Offer more background or should I just google them? :)
Excel Saga, Martian Successor Nadesico/ and its spinoff, Gekiganger 3, Dirty Pair/ Burn Up/ Plastic Little
I have wanted to see these for the longest time, but I can't buy them on my pension and no video stores around here ever get Anime. :(
Wild Arms.
Is this related to teh Game Series of the same name? I found a game here called Wild Arms 3 and it looked like Final Fantazy in the American West. Very intreaguing but @ $100 it was unafordable for me. :(

Could someone explain to me exactly what 'FAN SERVICE" is? I never have understood the term, but have never actually bothered asking till now.
Sexual Fantasies when done 'right' in Japaneese media of any sort is brilliant. I would rather watch say erotic Ghost Story than Fatal attraction so to speak. However, Japan doesnt seem to have the same 'moral bariers' in their society that we have here. I am not 'accusing' them of being immoral as obviously the definition of that alters from culture to culture. But as I am Australian some of the 'sexual issues' that arise on the more mature Japan media (Gunsmith Cats for eg) that are portrayed as 'common' just kinda give me the willies.

I've always thought it meant references for the audience. For example, in one episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Raphael says "What do you think this is? A cartoon?". The Simpsons is full of it, especially in reference to what US state Springfield is in.
I read somewhere that in anime, fan service is sexually tilted. ie. a brief shot up someone's skirt. I don't think fan service is strictly limited to this.
In any case, it's part of the show that's done consciously for the audience rather that necessary for the plot, character development, etc.
The placement of hyotantsugi (the funny pig creature) in Astroboy is an example of fan service. It's just there to serve the fans.

I don't remember anything creepy in Gunsmith Cats, but there's definately some anime where I think the females are portrayed as a little too young for their circumstances. I read a funny web article on anime that claimed the age of consent in Japan is foetus. (well it was funny in context)
Alright, getting to my top 10 favourite Anime series/OAVs:
1. Astroboy (of course)
2. Ninja Scroll (the TV series, exceptionally good)
3. Neon Genesis Evangelion (a classic, forcably underrated over time)
4. 3x3 Eyes (love the plot devices and characters)
5. Goku Midnight Eye (sooooo cool)
6. Dragonball Z (I quite like it, pity it seems to attract a lot of young arrogant dickheads)
7. Zoids (great story once you get into it)
8. Star Blazers (a classic)
OMG that's sad! I haven't seen much, and I can't bring myself to put the likes of Crush Gear on the list. http://www.astroboy-online.com/forums/style_images/1/icon8.gif I've also left off Transformers, Yu-Gi-Oh! and other kid's anime that I find a bit average and repetative. I've seen Burn Up W and Gunsmith Cats and a few others, but they didn't particularly stick in my mind. I have Ghost in the Shell SAC I've been meaning to watch, I'm sure that'll take some place in the top 5. I've also seen Macross Plus and found it dull. I'm still trying to get into Cowboy Beebop.
Top 10 favourite Anime movies:
1. Ninja Scroll (all round excellent)
2. Spirited Away (amazing, a very close second)
3. Akira (breathtaking)
4. Final Fantasy (forgot it was animated while watching)
5. Ghost in the Shell (a classic)
6. Castle of Cagliostro (very entertaining)
7. The Wings of Honeomaise (amazing quality animation)
8. Perfect Blue (gripping)
9. Animatrix (some bits great, some average)
10. Spriggan (good action, story lacks a bit)
I honestly haven't seen much else. Patlabour 2, Black Jack and another one which I can't remember.
Anime on my list to see are:
Grave of the Fireflies (apparently the saddest ending of all time)
Fist of the North Star (with alcohol and pizza, preferably)
Princess Mononoke (I've wanted to see this for the longest time)
Excel Saga (as soon as I can be bothered making the long drive to the only place I know that has it)
I wouldn't mind seeing Serial Experiments Lain and ..hack//sign (sp?) at some point, as I've heard these are favourites amongst a few people.
Now I'll probably think of 10 more after clicking Add Reply.

Mahoromatic, Photon, Nuku Nuku
Mahoro, Nuku Nuku, and Cutey Honey are female combat androids.
Photon is a little boy with the Hulk's strength.
The common theme is that of adult females and young boys. I do not know if there is anything sexual about this theme, but after seeing all these, I could not help but note the similarities. ;) Anyway, they are quite funny.
Nuku Nuku is an android/ cyborg with the brain of a kitten.
Mahoro is a retired combat android who spends her last few days (her power supply cannot be replaced or recharged), working as a maid for 14 yr. old Suguru (she has reasons of her own, but I will not spoil) who is an orphan. Action, humor, and bare skin of cute teenage girls make this series fun. The school teacher has naughty sexual fantasies involving the boy, which I find is the only objectional thing to the series.
Photon is a cute little boy who stumbles accross a speeping beauty, whom he accedentally awakens. Same kind of fun here as in Mahoromatic, but without the teacher's naughty sexual fantasies.
Excel Saga, Martian Successor Nadesico/ and its spinoff, Gekiganger 3, Dirty Pair/ Burn Up/ Plastic Little
Excel Saga is funny anyway, but much of the humor depends upon the viewers' familiarity with Japanese culture.
Martian Successor Nadesico: good guys try to save the earth from alien invaders. For relaxaition, they watch Gekiganger 3, which has since been made into a real anime.
Dirty Pair/ Burn Up/ Plastic Little
The first two combine comedy, girl, guns, massive destruction, and very mild fan service. Burn up also has the girl fantasizing about some rich guy sweeping her off her feet and ending her money troubles. Along with that theme is Phantom Quest Corp., which also features a main character whose eye for nice things always exceeds her income. Both women fantasize about the charming price ending their indebtedness.
Plastic Little has just about the most beautifully drawn female upper body characteristics, and also the other things just mentioned.
I've always thought it meant references for the audience. For example, in one episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Raphael says "What do you think this is? A cartoon?".
That is an aside, a term for when the charater addresses either the audience or thinks aloud. :P In this case, fan service means T & A (sorry for the crudeness).
As far as that goes, I value humor much higher than fan service.

I saw those animes in the cinema 2 years ago. The ending of 'Grave Of The Fireflies' is very sad indeed, I was on the verge of tears, really. Considering the dramatic and realism
it might as well could've been a real movie.
Princess Mononoke is a great fantasy-anime with a lot of action and profoundity too.
I remember those forrest-ghosts shaped like great big wild boars, and they tried to protect Princess Mononoke from the influence of a guy who had fallen in love with her.
I don't know the exactly storyline anymore, I'd love to see both of them once again.

I think it is, but have only seen the OAV, I know zilch about the game.
When I first began viewing this, its theme music immediately reminded me of Sergio Loene and Clint Eastwood's Speghetti Westerns. All through the series there are things that likewise tasted like speghetti. Anyway, it was really a funny series, except for its ending, which I found rather ambiguous. ;)

I was just giving Excel Saga a second view, and with the AdVid note turned on. Unfortunately, so many pop up, and are gone very fast. I need to pause the thing about every 5 seconds, just to read them.
Anyway, I noticed that either ep 22 or 23 (the second one on disc 6) parodies Fist of the North Star. Oh, it is so much more fun having seen the thing being parodied first!

I just saw Excel Saga for the first time. Oh boy, that's gotta be the funniest cartoon I've ever seen! A far bit of it I found a little too intense, mostly the voice acting of Excel, but just when I thought it was getting too slapstick they would slip in the most subtle and hilarious anime in-joke that would have me in stitches!
I've only seen the first five episodes. I think my favourites were the one where Excel's boss starts controlling reality with his Gameboy, and the one with the corporate cover-up where Excel gets the security password off the toilet wall. And then the other woman accidently e-mails the corruption document to the media...
Reporter: What now? Not another anonymous e-mail! Hmmm? Holy cow! This is ...
Boss: This is amazing!
Reporter: And if we analyze the header, we can get it's origins too!
Boss: Yes, but that can wait until later. This is going on the front page!
I also saw Grave of the Fireflies. I found it sadder watching the start again after seeing the whole movie, because they show the end first and it made more sense after. I thought it was sad, but I've seen other anime that I found more moving. Even some episodes of Astroboy. But it was probably just the mood I was in at the time.
I watched Fist of the North Star with my sister and her boyfriend, then just with her boyfriend. We couldn't help laughing at it either, it was so over the top. Not actually humerous, but entertaining on a level that we couldn't quite identify. :D You know that guy who could cut people in half with his fingers? He reckoned the music played when he came on was so 70s porn star music! Personally, I though the entire cast could have been from an 80s glam rock band. Van Halen, perhaps. Something about their hair.
Did you know there's a live action version of Fist of the North Star?
I'm thinking of using this as my avatar.

Seires:
1. Astroboy - duh ;)
2. Evangelion - still trying to figure out the movies :P
3. Street Fighter V - awsome series even if you're not really into the games
4. Angel Cop - fairly old anime, and quite short, but one of my favourites
5. Goku Midnight Eye - loved it. Shame it was never completed :(
6. Initial D - only just started watching it, and I'm hooked :)
I don't really watch a lot of Anime series, so here's a few non-Anime series to fill the list B)
7. Invader Zim
8. Samurai Jack
9. Futurama
10. Simpsons
On the movie side:
1. Ninja Scroll - first anime I ever saw. And still one of my favourites.
2. Princess Mononoke - absolutely awsome. See it!
3. Streetfighter - brilliant adaption of the game. Shame SF:Alpha was so horrible
4. Spirited Away - already mentioned a few times
5. Castle of Cagliostro - the best of all the Lupin movies
6. Patlabor (1 & 2) - not a favourite for some, but I enjoyed them
7. Appleseed - Oldie, but a goodie
8. Ghost in the Shell - classic
9. Fist of the North Star - mentioned earlier... I quite enjoyed it, though it's been years since I saw it
Having trouble thinking of something for the 10th position. I've seen heaps of Anime, but nothing else that really stands out... Even Akira; I can't see the appeal of that movie at all. I've watched it a few times, but never seem to really enjoy it.

Angel Cop
I think I have seen that. It has a truly gross-out scene where a head is blown apart.
Futurama was the most frustrating thing I have ever tried to watch. Ok, I am not a football fan, but even if I were, it still stinks that FOX tv put this show on right after the football game, that usually ran too long. Now, if it ran into the Simposons time slot, the Simpsons would still be shown without beginning in the middle. But not Futurama. No, that show simply got no respect.    And after it won awards, FOX cancelled it!!
Castle of Cagliostro: I came accross this by sheer accident. The other Lupin shows and movies are listed under 'Lupin', but not this one. I will watch it soon.
Grave of the fireflies was the saddest thing I have ever seen, it makes Oliver Twist look like a picnic.

Bad guy: "I didn't feel a thing."
Kenshiro: "you're already dead."
Bad guy: head explodes.

Patlabor: I thought this was ok, but after just seeing Mahoromatic, Dirty Pair Flash, and some others that were really funny and had some fan-service, I was not sure I could sit through this. I am now awaiting the second movie.

Make them. I recorded a segment of the movie onto my computer using a capture card, giving me an AVI file. Then I cropped it down to the part I wanted using VirtualDub, then loaded the AVI file into Animation Shop. I deleted every second frame and scaled it down by heaps to reduce the file size. Then I saved it as an animated GIF (one of the Save As options in Animation Shop) and put it on my web space like any other picture.

When I first saw Yu-Gi-Oh I thought "oh great another tournament game to promote trading card merchandise". But I've quite gotten in to it now. Even the big battles only last 3-4 episodes max and the story moves along at a really good pace. Lots of unexpected twists and good character development.

I usually don't get to see much anime', but if you see my list of animated programs and movies, you will see how ecleltic my choices are.
1]AKIRA - the best there is. No other movie comes close.
2]COWBOY BEBOP - one of the coolest Anime' movies
3]FINAL FANTASY / THE SPIRITS WITHIN - woefully underrated CGI movie.
4]ANIMATRIX - A fabulous mind trip.
Now these mostly American made stuff cannot be classed as Anime' but they come really close.
5]HEAVY METAL - If you can get this movie [made in the late 70's], it will send you on a mind trip like the Animatrix.
6]SPAWN - HBO's horror toon sends chills up your spine
Now to the TV toons:
7]BATMAN, THE ANIMATED SERIES - The first versions shown originally on FOX are still the best after 12 years
8]THE SIMPSONS - I saw last night's episode, and I must say that 16 years hasn't dimmed their sharpness.
9]FUTURAMA - It's a shame that this series was abused by FOX, it was about to reach that rare plateau occupied by The Simpsons.
10]FAMILY GUY - this show is filthy, raunchy, and downright funny.
Two other shows worth mentioning, they're good but some people do not get the humor these shows presented:
11]KING of the HILL - If you watch this show, you will know why we have a simpleton like George W. Bush as President of the USA. This is an all-too accurate portrayal of the people who support him.
12]The PJ's - This claymation series humor was extremely funny, but you have to be an African-American [like me] to really know the painful truth behind the jokes.

7]BATMAN, THE ANIMATED SERIES - The first versions shown originally on FOX are still the best after 12 years
8]THE SIMPSONS - I saw last night's episode, and I must say that 16 years hasn't dimmed their sharpness.
There are a few cartoons that I'm not quite sure if they're anime or not. I know The Simpsons isn't, but some cartoons like Batman, X-Men Evolution, TMNT (2003), Spiderman Unlimited, etc seem to be sort of in a middle ground. The animation quality is way better than your typical US production, but stylistically it doesn't really qualify as anime. They're also serialised.
Does anyone know which genre these fit into? Where are they being made?
Aeon Flux is another quirky one. I've heard it's Chinese and doesn't qualify as anime.

I must now make a few additions to my list:
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (http://www.abenobashidvd.com/usual/usual.php). This seems to be a cross between FLCL and Excel Saga. I say that because it two main characters are a boy and girl who reminded me of similar characters in FLCL, and as far as Excel Saga goes, it is the same type of plot: anything can and does happen. Moreover it parodies English/Western things as well as Japanese. It like Excel, features AD-Vid notes to explain things that Western viewers might not 'get'.
Outlaw Star (http://theotaku.com/outlawstar/characters.shtml). I like all the charaters, but especailly Aisha the Ctarl-Ctarl. The series is adventurous and funny.
 :wahah:

Speaking of Aeon Flux.....Does anyone know more about the anime called The Maxx? It was shown on MTV somewhere in the year of '95, together with Aeon Flux.
Those series were part in a TV broadcast named as 'MTV's oddities'.
As far as I can remember, The Maxx was a big blue guy (monster/robot?), which seemed to protect a jungle queen or something like that. I don't remember the exactly storyline anymore.

 I'm not sure if this one counts as anime either.

I remember seeing THE MAXX, AEON FLUX, and most of the MTV animated programs, from LIQUID TELEVISION, to the two I mentioned, as well as watching those morons BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD quite religiously. They were not anime' but they were better and more entertaining than the dreck on Saturday Mornings seen on the networks.
The best one was AEON FLUX with its hyper-violence and sexuality. THE MAXX was too moody, and B&B was so stupid, it really turned out to be clever.
I wonder what MTV has up their sleeve when it comes to animation?

5. Tetsuwan Atumu (new (Japanese Language),old,* older, manga) funny because kids are so cute.
9. Dirty Pair/ Burn Up/ Plastic Little/ and others with goofy slapstick-style humor, massive destruction,* and fan-service.
10. Wild Arms. It has the cutest little vampire I have ever seen!
I will post my favorite movies later.
OK, here are some more that I have only recently viewed:
Hellsing: very cool, not much humor, though.
Trigun: Very funny. Atom & Vash the Stampede share a common value for all human life. Both try to save everybody, including the bad guys.
Chobits: Persocoms can be very cute.
Outlaw Star: Love that Ctarl-Ctarl! :wahah: (I have not used wahah for a long time).
Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi: Very cute, kids reminded me of the ones in FLCL, humor was like Excel Saga.
NUKU NUKU TV: "Grrr! Its Shirakaba! shi-ra-ka-ba!!" :D
Jungle Emperor Leo: The way Kimba TWL was meant to be.
Ruin Explorers: poor girl has a very unique curse. :P
The Big O: Cool stuff, reminds me of several American shows.
More to come--

Netflix (http://www.netflix.com/Genre?sgid=623&lnkctr=LhcGenre623) has hunderds of anime titles, many complete series  ; but some only the first few discs in a larger series. I must check other resources to make sure I do not start anything that is not completely available.
BTW, I updated my list. Newer entries are yellow text. :)
Mahoromatic (6 discs) had quite a bit of skin, most of it was non-sexual in context. However, as I noted, the female teacher has her heart set on 14 year-old Suguru, and her fantasies are unsuitable for kids. There is a Summer Special that is about Mahoro's quest to eliminate all of Suguru's porno mags. It is only about 30 minutes, but funny as he**.--Censored--

Let us first establish what is anime:
Unless I am mistaken, & I am not afraid to admit error, when I have erred, anime (http://reference.animeworld.com/glossary/index.php?a=term&d=1&q=anime) is a term for what was once called Japanimation (http://reference.animeworld.com/glossary/index.php?a=term&d=1&q=Japanimation). At any rate, it is animation in the Japanese style. However, if you examine the titles listed in this thread, you will see that as used here, it means animation produced in Japan & in general having a Japanese sound track. You will often see complaints about dubbed titles, English speakers preferring Japanes audio & English subtitles over English dubbed (& edited  ) titles. Thus, we may conclude that the term anime excludes 1. animation produced in Japan, but lacking Japanese sound track, & 2. animation that is not produced in Japan.
I happen to know that neither Frizt the Cat, nor its sequel meet the definition of anime as used in this forum & thread. :D Even if we allow that English dubbed titles can be anime, Fritz simply does not even meet the broader definition of anime. :P

Fritz was a departure from kiddy animation, and even though it was rated X it actually opened the way for serious adult themed cartoons. So I list it here as Anime. The underground animation scene, the underground comic scene and manga have to interface somewhere. It's Pacific rim pop-culture. I stand by Crumb. Fritz is Anime.
No ethnioentric restrictions. Hentai? Perhaps. Hentai is cnnected to Fritz.
But if it is insisted that only animation produced in Japan is Anime.... I will confess my error and redo my list. What will we call the Anime from Korea? And India? And China?

I watched both of the Fritz cartoons, the thing I best remember was a scene in which Hitler is featured. :D Quite nasty, but funny. However, I did not think the films were funny over all, and was quite disappointed.
In regards to anime, I suppose it is dependant upon what dictionary or whose definition one uses. However, as mentioned before, anime is from Japan.

11. Fritz the Cat
That's the Vibe as far as I can feel.
Fritz the Cat? I did not think that was anime.
If Fritz the cat isn't anime, nothing is. I thought you would kick about the Disney.
[/b][/quote]
Ok jeffbert... Even though Justice league unlimited and Teen Titans, and many more are being made by Seoul and Tokyo animation units and you can clearly see the korean names, I admit my error. But I say if it were not for Bakshi and Fritz, there would never had been any adult Anime like Akira in theatres. Fritz was first. And it's not meant to be funny. It's meant to be true.

Its the big one! My heart cannot take the strain. Cybotron has admitted being wrong about something!
Lord, lettest now thy servant depart in peace, for I have seen Cybotron's confession of error.
I myself must do likewise, for I didst fail to seest Disney's The Jungle Book amongst Cybotron's list. This was surely not made in Japan; therefore, it cannot be anime. This failure on my part couldest causest some confusion in the camp. Therefore, I repent in sackcloth & ashes, lest the LORD blot out my name from under Heaven (which will likely happen anyway, since I have no son to keep my name after my untimely demise). :D

I have just begun the first set of Invader Zim. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001LJBTE/102-8630417-1194519?v=glance) I nearly quit after about 15 minutes, because not much happened that I found funny. However, once Zim reached Earth, the fun began, big time! I am so glad I was patient!

One strange feature of the Zim DVD is its subtitles, they are in Irkian, & thus worthless to humans. However, I just happened to be watching this on My JVC & TV, rather than my PC. As I had been watching Jay Leno, & had the TV's closed caption switched on, I noticed that Zim actually had them. Thus, although I could only accesss text via the tv's settings, nevertheless, English text was available. Weird! ;)
