would you name your daughter MEOW-CHILD?

Postby jeffbert » 7 years ago

Upon transcribing the data in the 2003 series boxed set #1's DVD booklet, I thought it both funny & odd that the little girl whose ice cream ends up on a woman's blouse was actually named

ニャン子 / Nyan-ko / Meow child

:p :ninja:

Well, in Japanese, it's not immediately something as ridiculous sounding as "meow child." From a Japanese language standpoint, it sounds like a mild pun on similar, normal names like Nanako or Miko. (Which in a literal sense mean "seven child" and "god child.")

It's kinda like how Anglophones name their kids "Lily" or "Brooklyn", despite how ridiculous it sounds in other languages that a kid is named after a plant or a city.

Thanks, Fauna; I really though that it was an odd name, but now know better.
