Marine Express 2016 manga

Postby Shiyonasan » 7 years ago

This somehow flew under the radar last year. Shigeto Ikehara, who authored and drew some Mega Man and Gundam manga, began releasing a manga in 2016 based on the 1979 Osamu Tezuka special, Marine Express. Looks like the first volume is being sold, with the second volume set to release on Thursday.

Without warning, but creating a great expectation, Home-sha today publishes the first volume of Marine Express in Japan: an adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's [film] released in August 1979, which is notable for bringing together a large number of the characters of the so-called "manga god" in the same story. The work, designed by the cartoonist Shigeto Ikehara (author of several adaptations of Mega Man and Gundam), aims to recover the famous adventure of Tezuka respecting the style of the author and presenting some [other surprises].

"Detective Shunsaku Ban is dead to the sponsor of the submarine train Marine Express, which will soon make its test trip. Chasing the assassin, the investigator is ambushed and is about to die, but a timely Black Jack picks him up and cures him in the hospital. Shunsaku discovers that the culprit has gotten on the train and leaves the train quickly followed by the doctor, who wants to pay him the medical costs of the treatment. The Marine Express begins its journey with several passengers inside, all with their small moment of glory in history: Professor Nasenkopf (Ochanomizu), creator of the train; his son Rock, the driver; The little Adam (Atom / Astro Boy); Credit (Duke Red), the project director, and his daughter Milly (Chocola); Acetylene Lamp, one of the stewards; and the duo Skunk Kusai and Ham Egg, among others. The trip will become very rugged on several levels, and travelers will experience an adventure in which they will have to fight for their lives."

Dedicated to the promotion of manga, the publisher has opened a website to publicize the project and has also presented a special trailer:

Marine Express (Kaitei Choutokkyuu Marine Express) was a television special made on the occasion of a charity campaign of the time which, like much of Tezuka's work, emphasizes the importance of avoiding the environmental destruction and the disasters that can provoke the neglect of humans. The story inspired the popular video game Astro Boy: Omega Factor [made by Treasure for the Game Boy Advance], which includes many elements of the film.

I don't remember Dr. Kiriko being in the TV show, looks like they added him as one of the bad guys.
And how did Mustachio get on the plane after being cold conked and then wake up in Black Jack's clinic?
New concept here, the train is now a monorail mag-lev.

Ooo, now I need to read this and watch the film. I'm hoping it's easier to find than the Astro Boy short films. Considering this manga is being made, that's probably the case, I just hadn't heard of Marine Express until recently.

Great! Well, at some point I'll still want to buy a copy, (ya know, voting with money), but that's convenient that it's on YT as well. I just need to wait for school to get out to get on YT (I have no data and the school wifi blocks YT... nice thing is, they don't know about ABO, so I can get on here any time I want. XD)

This certainly looks interesting! I like the art, too, it looks very consistent and polished. Too bad they can't draw the song from the movie though!
