What does Atom's battle cry mean?

Postby YJ_Doodle » 8 years ago

I was watching the English Sub version of 2003 and I couldn't help but wonder what Atom's battle cries meant. All I could hear was "Sorei" and "Eigh"(???) The subs translated it as "Take that", but I just wanted to make sure. Regardless of the meanings, I found them a bit silly as well as cute, rather than fierce XD

From what I understand they're just kind of noises one would make when fighting. Like what you said, they're battle cries. I looked up sorya though and one website says "what to yell as you attack; a fighting taunt or war cry"

I think I've heard the same 'cry' in the Japanese language 'missing 89' from the 60's

I always thought they were kiai's, a short yell or shout used in martial arts before performing an attacking move, so I never really thought about a translation as it's a sound that really does not HAVE a communicative translation.

I always thought those that did the translations just felt that Atom HAD to say something otherwise American audiences might not sit well with him just yelling. I could be wrong though

Perhaps they thought that it sounded like he was saying something, and put the closest approximation to a meaning there that those "words" could ever have?

It's interesting you say that, because around the same time as the 2003 series, Dragon Ball Z was still rather popular. You would think that they would just have him yell like the characters in that anime since they obviously recut it to be more action based ala DBZ.

It's also a highly inaccurate dub

When I hear "Let's Rocket" I think "Team Rocket's blasting off again!"
