Atom's height and weight

Postby Shiyonasan » 9 years ago

I've seen a couple threads in the past for this, but I haven't ever seen a definitive answer.

It seems there's conflicting sources on his height and weight, but from a couple official sources I've found as well as confirmation from a few other fans, his general accepted height and weight is 135 centimeters and 30 kilograms, which is about 4 feet 5 inches and about 66 pounds. Here's the two official sources I've found:

1) Osamu Tezuka World Entertainment Square in the Tokyo Opera City building in Japan

As you can see on the bottom left, Atom's name and height are mentioned.

2) Japan Rugby Football Union

They list his height and weight on a jumbotron in their stadium when he's "announced" as the team's 24th player:

3) In Episode 3 of the 2003 series (Destination Deimos), the captain of the spaceship states that the weight of Dr. Ochanomizu's luggage is 30 kilograms over the listed weight. Ochanomizu soon after realizes that the extra weight happens to be Atom, who snuck his way onto the spaceship. (This weight is confirmed in the screencaps in Post #4 of this thread.)

In a couple previous threads about this subject, a few other sources list his height and weight, which, along with some ABO posters, are...

http://www.astroboy-online.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8258

1) The Let's Draw Manga: Astro Boy book released in 2003 by Tezuka Productions in America. This was mentioned by Jeffbert on the first page of the first thread.

2) On a bonus feature on the 2009 movie DVD, his height is stated as being 4 feet 6 inches. This is mentioned by Fairlane12 on the fourth page of the first thread (though he disagrees with this).

3) Astro Cat, mentioned by Tetsuwan Penguin on the fourth page of the first thread and the first page of the second thread. Interestingly, his height is listed in that manga as being 123 centimeters, which is about 4 feet 0.5 inches.

Ultimately, after my short research on this, I think it's most plausible that his height is 135 centimeters and 30 kilograms. Every source I've seen lists his weight as being 30 kilograms, 66 pounds, or 67 pounds. As for his height, I'm more inclined to believe that he's 135 centimeters because of the first two sources I've listed and because multiple ABO posters have stated his height as being that height.

Even though Atom Cat was written by Tezuka, it came several years after the first two series and manga were made. If I'm not mistaken, his height was mentioned at least once in the '63 or '80 anime and at least once in the original manga. If someone could post an image or give some other legitimate evidence to confirm this, then go ahead.

It is interesting though how there's conflicting sources for what Atom's height is. It seems certain though that his weight is 30 kilograms/66 pounds.

If anyone has any other official sources that list or mention his height and/or weight, then post them in this thread. I'll update this post with that information.

Well Tezuka was never consistent and often changed various facts to suit the story. He constantly changed Atom's height as he varied the head to body ratio. He claimed that the taller he drew Atom the less popular he was!

He's been drawn both with and without the boots, especially while flying. It's implied most of the time that his boots and briefs are part of his body, yet they are shown as removed in many scenes (sometimes for comic relief such as when a monster slaps his bare butt!). His belt is implied as being part of his body, yet he used it to hold an item while flying ('golden flute').

The boots have been depicted as being part of his legs with the 'shoe' folding up to expose his jet/rocket nozzles (both in the '63 and '03 anime, as well as the Manga), yet in the 80 anime his is shown with bare feet (with toes!) and the boots are just boots.

In the 2003 ELV episode #5 "Deimos" when Astro stows aboard the space ship it is reported to Dr. O'Shay that his luggage is 62.5 lbs over weight. I don't know what it is in the Japanese version.

Just checked; both the captain of the spaceship and Dr. Ochanomizu say "sanjuu kiroguramu", which is 30 kilograms. Here's screencaps of the captain and Ochanomizu stating Atom's weight:

Guess the ELV dub wasn't exactly correct. Nothing unusual about that! Of course we don't know if the sub's are correct either, but the Japanese word for "thirty" (san-ju) should be easy enough to pick out in the dialog. (the numbers follow a pattern).

Actually, isn't 30 kilograms about that same weight? Just a little over, isn't it? (I know nothing about the appropriate conversion so)

A little under, actually. 62.5 pounds is about 28.3 kilograms.

Whoops, you're right. Looking at it again, I'm not quite sure what my thought process was when I replied to your post.

Just a little bit of miscommunication, I suppose. Maybe you read it wrong, or responded to something entirely different after reading it (I don't know how to make the latter statement make sense?? like).
