The robot school:



Vina-sensei announces that Karl (KARU) is moving to South America. Note that because Kenichi was altogether absent from this series, a robot takes this role, in this adaptation of Alien's Ball.


From left to right, as named by Ladd & Co.: one of the Chime Twins (presumably Pong, because Ping would be on the right), ?, , Melody, ?, COIL SPRING (SO NAMED BY ME), & LIGHT BULB (SO NAMED BY ME).


Tuffy, ?, Honey Bee, Ping & Pong. I should have gone from right to left.

The class has a going-away party for Karl:






The entertainment:

1: Tuffy juggles chairs


2: these two dance without tripping over or stepping on each other.


3: Melody sings.


The others pressure Atom into an act.

It appears that Karl's cap, sitting on the ground symbolizes his death. Recall Gesicht's overturned cap in GREATEST ROBOT, symbolized his death, Tobio's cap, likewise.

Oh I liked this one. So many great Cobalt moments, even if it's mostly only in the first half. I don't have this one, regrettably...

It's interesting to note that in the later episodes, Astro Boy is shown going to school; albeit an all-robot school. In the manga, he is shown as the token robot in a school for humans. (A segregated school in the 21st century! I guess the general Japanese television audience in the 1960s was not as enlightened as the manga readers of "Tetsuan Atomu!")
Of course this situation was corrected in the 1980s anime reboot.

This episode is similar to the manga episode in DH #18 on page 195 "The Mysterious Ball".

I don't get why they added the bit about the moon to the beginning of the Anime, it wasn't in the Manga story.
Also in the manga the ball was a signaling device that attracted aliens to earth, it was an egg that hatched the aliens in the Anime. Well this wasn't the first time that the story changed from one form to the other. BTW the Manga was dated from Oct to Dec,1957.
