Seems hard to believe, but the third Astro Boy anime adaptation is 20 years old today! It debuted on April 6, 2003 in Japan.

Guess we are due for a new one, they seem to come out every 20 years. We did have two other 'minor' releases between 2003 and now though (LAB and GABG).

I have a feeling the Pluto anime might be that "new Astro Boy series every 20 years" series this time. I wouldn't be opposed to a brand new traditional Astro Boy anime like the 1963, 1980, or 2003 series though.

20 years later and it's still criminally underrated

It seems that the differences in cultures are responsible for the poor reception in the USA. The US version made Atom a smart mouthed bratty kid in the mold of Bart Simpson, or close to it. But, even with the dubbing/editing/episode order, the new characters, stories, etc., it simply did not fit the Saturday Morning cartoon mold.
