This episode bears a VERY strong resemblance to 52 Atom's 1st Love. I have written a chapter that compares the two, but here I will very briefly post a few images to create an introduction & synopsis. Do not ask me to elaborate on the similarities, I am saving that for my book.
Anyway, the images will soon follow.
19 Mars' First Love
The story opens with a softball game
The coaches:
Nobody on Higeoyaji's team can make a run:
"Yer out!"
The score:
Guess whose team is winning.
Cupid is at work:
This is Agnes, Duke Red's robot cheerleader; I think sho compares to Maria (of the Blue Knight story), because she is so pretty all the guys are in love with her.
Our little hero is smitten.

Duke Red introduces Agnes, who transfers to Hijeoyaji's class
Both coaches enjoy a beer, & Red tells of the future of robotic athletes.
Agnes comes to school for the 1st time:
Calculus in elementary school!? Kinichi flubs the problem
But lovely Agnes finishes it correctly.
Mars is not the only boy who cannot concentrate on classwork.
Mars' daydream
During athletic class, Agnes shows her ability is superb:
Mars' fantasy:
Aww, so cute!
Mars' fantasy:

A blue-eyed Astro Boy?
Interesting - it seems Jetter Mars is blue-eyed and has blue boots. Guess that was to make him "different" - plus those suspender-thingies attached to his superman cape!
He looks more "robotic" than Astro (his hair looks more like a helmet fitting snug over his head with an "ear hole"), and I guess they never put him clothes as much? But my-my Agnes is ah-hem!! rather well developed for girl of that age!!
Tezuka really was a master of cuteness though -- hopefully someday we'll be able to see all of this series, too. Thanks so much for posting these, Jeffbert.

I think those blue eyes look super cute. I'm a sucker for blue eyes.
Now I read about Mars on the tezukainenglish.com site, and I'm still confused as to why Tezuka made a "clone"--I don't see a lot of stuff to explore in this character that Atom hadn't already touched before the 1970's.
But then, I have yet to see the Jetter Mars series.
