Strange Wings showed this episode to his Japanese professor who said that Dr. Yamanoue did survive the accident in that earlier episode & had been abducted by a villain.

Maybe it is a borrowed frame from the B&W series. I would need to look at the images I have.

Yup, Yamanoue survived that landslide accident. He wrote that letter to Mars. His letter consists of the kanji character for heart, which reveals the weakness of Ropuras(the villain of the story). Yamanoue realizes that Mars’s emotions and compassion is valuable and therefore, that is where Mars’s true strength lies. Ropuras captured Yamanoue because he wanted Yamanoue to upgrade him into a stronger robot. However, Ropuras lacks the heart and compassion that Mars has. Therefore, he will never have true strength.

Hm, this is the series' end, right? I think I saw a clip of the last few moments of the episode... Why does he fly away with Melchi like that? Where are they going? And while Yamanoue seems to have survived the accident, is he still alive at this point? You said he was captured by some villain, so...

Unlike Astro boy, I don't think the final episode of Mars was planned as such.
