I don't know for certain one way or the other. I've only heard rumours and they could be just propaganda. There's supposed to be a billabong somewhere alleged to be the very body of water where this swaggie chose to drown himself rather than face arrest and prosecution for stealing somebody's sheep....

I thought so. Although I used to have a novelization of the movie that said in the credits on the back cover or somewhere that it was a fictionalized account of the life of Joseph Merrick, known as the Elephant Man.

However I was certain Merrick really did exist.
