I don't think it has to be a square, it just means that the avatar wouldn't fill the whole square.
In this case, it would be better to crop the image to keep only Uran and not see much of the room around her. Also, when possible, it's always better to go from the video than to reduce the frames of an existing animated gif. I noticed it made a huge difference in the quality.
I lost my ability to transfert video on my computer, unfortunately, so I can't provide the original animation again at the moment.
