It's not cold. It's actually thousands of degrees  No radiation is relative: neutrons are flying everywhere in the fusion reactor, but as soon as you "power off", no more radiation. As for safe, products aren't radioactive and the fusion reaction isn't self-sustaining, so even if it blows up, it can't be far more dangerous than a "standard" chemical explosion; no long-time contamination.
I also highly doubt that Astro could carry his personal fusion reactor: a tokamak designed for fusion is HUGE: a human, even tall, can stand up easily in that thing :D

All energy sources use one of these forces. Batteries for example are based on chemical reactions, which are themselves based on electromagnetism.

Cold Fusion

Postby Legeremain99 » 15 years ago

Hi Fafner, I was speaking of Cold Fusion...not a Fusion Reactor. I have seen a science program showing cold fusion power modules an inch square that could power a normal household for a number of years. If I can recall where I obtained the information, I will let you know. Cold Fusion is a completely different concept than a Fusion Reator. I appreciate the input though.

I know about cold fusion. However when I see "fusion power", I think about the nuclear fusion, not cold fusion. As far as I know, it is a hoax anyway

This is Science Fiction, so anything is possible.

;) I really don't think we need to worry about whether or not Cold Fusion is a hoax. We're talking about Science Fiction, so why not? I did see that program I told you about. Whether it was true or not, I am unsure. I only caught the last few minutes of the documentary. Anyway, as I said this is Science Fiction, so why couldn't he be powered by a Cold Fusion module? It's no different than having a Warp Engine in a starship. It may not be possible at the moment, but who knows what the future may hold. Point made. :D

PS: Just wanna say thanks for the link to the article. It seems to say it's neither proven or unproven. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. Take care. ;) :astro:

I could kinda see it. And keep in mind you can't always be sure what an actor can do until we see them do it. They had to fight for Christopher Reeve to play Superman, no one thought Michael Keaton could play Batman, Stan Lee himself didn't think Toby Mcquire (sp?) could play Spider-Man until he saw him in action and if you were to see Hugh Jackman in "The boy from Oz" would YOU believe he could play Wolverine?

Too serious am I :p
There is a difference nevertheless between cold fusion and a warp engine for example. Cold fusion is thought to be false (although it's true that it's not completely sure). On the other hand, we don't currently know whether a warp engine can be built, making it more eligible for science fiction (at least for me). In theory it could exist, as our current knowledge of physics don't contradict it, and even could allow it in theory ( and here is another link since you seem to like them :D ) ; we just don't know how to build one.

I remember that. I prefer to not label what actors can or can't do but I was glad that didn't happen XD
