A similar thing to Atlas defending Atom occurs when Pluto realizes that there is something he wants to protect. I think of all 4 versions, the 2003 makes it the most clear. He sees the love that all the people direct toward Atom, & recalls Epsilon's question: "Is there nothing you value enough that you would protect it?" (Paraphrase). He then decides to sacrice himself and fight the much stronger Dark Pluto, not for his pride, but to protect the smaller & weaker robot, the very same robot he just tried to destroy.

In the 1980 series, I have a soft spot for most of the Daddy Walrus scenes. I thought it was funny having this obnoxious loud mouth defending Astro in a tight spot, even if Astro was better off without him.

In '63 he was more of a drama queen than a loudmouth. He was ok in 2003, except for his robophobe stance in the beginning.
