And no, as I've said NUMEROUS times, I'm pretty sure Hoshie had hated Tenma's guts when she had left him.
I think Atom was like salt in an open wound to Umataro. As long as he was present, he was reminded that his son was dead. He could not bear the constant reminder of this fact. True, for a while he was thrilled with his robot, but this may well have been because he had created him; he had succeeded in making such a complex robot, one that was orders of magnitude better than any others. As a scientist, he could not help but be thrilled. Scara said as much: Dr. Tenma eventually would regard Atom as nothing more than an experiment.
I think Hoshie's divorcing him may have been an attempt to change his mind about the robot, though this is speculation. He obviously still loved her, else why go to her deathbed? Umataro never stopped loving Hoshie, but perhaps each felt the other would yield in regards to Atom. Husband called his wife's bluff; when confronted by divorce papers, he made no attempt to weasel out of the deal with Hamegg. Yet she stood fast; after all, she was initially resistant to the idea of loving a robot look-alike of Tobio, and he pressured her to grow fond of him. Then, after she had warmed to him, her husband becomes cold toward him.
After Hoshie's death, Umataro, to honor her memory, if for no other reason, worked in the shadows to help Atom. Likewise, in
The Egyptian Conspiritors & at least one other comic adventure, Tenma hid his identity from Atom, but helped him.
