There are only a few frames in episode 62 with the guns, and I think they added some 'fuzzyness' to hide them.
Note that this is the episode that was filmed in sepia tone.

Yeah, that shot looks weird. Cool, but weird.
To be honest, the inconsistency of the togo boots is often more weird or surprising for me than it is frustrating. Don't get me wrong, I prefer him having the gogo boots on, it's just weird when I'l read stories in the original manga, and then he doesn't have them. I'm so used to him having the gogo boots on that it kind of looks strange to see him without them in certain story lines.
I suppose it's largely because my first exposure to Astro Boy was the 2003, where he wore them all the time. But that being said, I don't mind if he doesn't wear the gogo boots all of the time, but I just don't think it will ever stop being weird for me.

Gogo boots? I'm not really sure just WHAT shoe style influenced Tezuka in drawing them, but nothing recent seems to fit exactly. Gogo boots are almost tall enough, but they are high heeled, which Astro's are not. Moon boots are flat, but not quite as high on the calves. I think Uggs are too modern, in any case they are shorter than moon boots. In fact, Astro's boots seem come up so high as to cover his knees! (I've never seen him drawn with a bended knee actually.) Also the large 'cuffs' at the top of the boot are very unique too. Anyone wanting to do a perfect cosplay might have to become a cobbler to get that part right.
@LBF You're probably right, sepia is a brownish tone, I'm not sure what that blue cast is called. I was thinking of the process I used to use when I was printing B&W paper in the darkroom. Sepia toning was used more to seal in the silver halides for archival purposes than to change the tone though.
In that shot Astro is doing a mid air inside loop while blinding his enemies with his searchlight eyes and blasting their magnetic ray projector with his butt guns. Ladd probably had no choice but to leave that frame in there, and the flash from his guns firing at night hides the barrels of the guns anyway. If Astro didn't have his arms extended out like that (sorta like wings), that maneuver would have violated the laws of aerodynamics (not that Tezuka cared!)
I wonder how many candle power his searchlights are?
Actually: his knees ARE bent here (from 2003? 1980? or it could have been photoshopped)

"The 鉄腕アトム Fan" wrote:Haha never really thought about this . What really bothers me the most is that in the manga he grows tall then shrinks then is tall in another. Maybe the constancy is like is disappearing boots.
Tezuka mentions in the manga introductions that he experimented with Astro's height over time. He found that the taller he drew him, the less his reader's liked the character.

That's the 80's version. His knees magically become visible in certain shots when his legs are bent. Of course, this applies more for the '03 version, in which the boots never come off, and where, even when his knees are slightly bent in some shots, he doesn't seem to have knees...
Random off-topic tangent, but I've thought that the last episode in the 80's series could actually have happened at almost any point during the series' run, chronologically speaking, because it was explaining why Atom had girly legs (which is kind of weird to say or think about, to be honest ).

Yeah, sorry about that. I once heard someone refer to his boots as gogo boots, and it just kind of stuck.
