Sasaki Kojiro's talent at building things is not as impressive as Nokko's or Sharaku's because he needs proper parts, while they & Mustafa (Bobke) the boy from 113, “Back,” the Country without Laughter (101, Dangerous Mission) make things from junk. Nevertheless, he assembled this laser in just a few seconds.

Image

After all that work, Sasaki chills out by watching TV. This is a rather long, but funny sequence, & anyone who can make animated GIFs, just send your email address:

I doubt the younger members are familiar with such reception problems.

Image

He has second thoughts about watching TV. :p

Image
Sasaki is going to spy on Tawashi & co.

Image
He is outside the window, looking in.

Image

Image
Seeing that Tawashi, Ochanomizu, Atom, & Nakamura were going out, he buys this guy's car, & prepares to follow them.

Note the tag. :p

You might wonder, why don't they just use the key to remove the handcuffs? There is no key; they open only when the wearer changes his ways.

Another GIF in waiting.

What follows is a series of futile attempts to cut the chain:

They even call Noh Uno (anyone remember him?) of 33, Two Magicians (33, The Three Magicians) to use magic:

1st, the warm-up.

The 1st, & only time we see Ochanomizu's ear.

Another GIF. As far as I could tell, Higeoyaji thought that the sound of the siren would provoke Atom into breaking Jail, to go out & help.

Rather than anger, Tawashi laughs at O & H's causing the escape.

To be continued--

When I first saw this episode I don't think I ever noticed just HOW Atom and this guy managed to get handcuffed in the first place. Was it HIS idea, or did it somehow happen by accident?
This isn't the first time Tezuka put the "007" plates on a car (The Beatles had it too).
I wonder if this guy is supposed to be a spy?

To remove impervious chain from a robot linking a human with no key.

Step 1: Remove robot arm.
Step 2: Slide off chain.
Step 3: Reattach robot arm to robot.

Alternatively...

Step 1: Call Dr. Black Jack to remove human arm.
Step 2: Pay Dr. Black Jack.
Step 3: Have Dr. Black Jack remove human arm.
Step 4: Slide off chain.
Step 5: Have Dr. Black Jack reattach human arm.

Well clearly it must have been in the accident that Atom and this guy got handcuffed together. He tried to stop the stolen car, and he couldn't!

Thank's Jeffbert, we are waiting for the rest of your commentary on this.
BTW, there is a bit of a 'Goldfinger' tie in later on, hope you capture that!

There are several films that have this plot element. TCM just ended its SUNDAYS WITH HITCH month; I think that a week ago yesterday it showed Hichcock’s The 39 Steps (1935) which, featured a man on the lam who was cuffed to a woman, who was quite contrary to him. They were enemies for quite some time.

There was also a film about escaped convicts shackled together, one, a white racist, the other, black; The Defiant Ones, & a cartoon about Sylvester the cat & a bulldog in a similar situation. :p D' Fightin' Ones. :p I thought I had a few more films noted, but, alas, they are absent from my notes. :hyo: Wikipedia's page for 39 omits any mention of the handcuffs until they are freed from them. :o hmy: I almost thought I had erred in my noting the similarity.

I do have the requested Homage to Cubby / 007. I will post the rest of the images later.

Here is another time Atom's GPS unit is removed & tossed away.

Sasaki now imagines how he might lighten his burden:

But he discards the thought.

Finally, they reach Sasaki's home.

Now, for the homage to Cubby     :

I did not know that his legd grew in diameter when he uses his jets! :p

Note the eyelids, which are usually shaded, are not here.

Now, after all that, Sasaki's reform is official!

I believe these next few tell the origin of the special handcuffs:
Image

Image
It appears that Sasaki Kojiro made them.

Interesting that with all of the advanced stuff at the MOS they couldn't cut through the handcuff chain, but the laser cut it at once.

Good point, Tetsuwan Penguin; all Atom needed to do was to activate his arm jets, & his hands would retract, & handcuff would fall away.

Yeah I forgot about :astro: 's arm jets which did appear in at least two of the '63 series episodes.

Same thing with being strapped to the table and freeing his feet by activating his leg jets. Except that he needed a recharge first. BTW that's probably how he broke the straps, not by expansion of his legs with the jets but by yanking them free under power. It's only the way they animated it that makes it look the other way in single frame.
