This episode features Japanese mythical / ghost story characters; & though I will include short quotes from web pages about these spirits, as well as hyperlinks to those pages, I fear there will still be much head-scratching & wonder. I myself, was not able to learn enough to satisfy my curiosity.

So far: The well-dressed robot (Tomson) has the ability to see through things, & has determined that many of the Buddha statues in a certain city are fake. --paraphrase of Tezuka web site's synopsis for #188.

What constitutes a real statue, I do not know.

Image
This crow Tengu is called a Karasu; Tengu are mountain spirits that according to which source one reads, may be evil or good. Here is one page I read in preparing for this thread: http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/tengu.shtml

Atom is about to say something that Ochanomizu will find rather offensive:

Image

Image

Image
This type of Tengu mimicked is called Yamabushi, and is superior in rank to the crow-type. Ochanomizu's nose grows gradually, then returns to its proper size.

So, they go off in search of answers about the statues.

Another web page with details: http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/furyu-goodin-popup.html Anyway, one or the other of these pages details the octagonal staff that the Tengu use. The one above, is a time-bomb.

It seems that Hamegg is trying to buy the genuine Buddha statues.

More to come--

It looks like in this episode they filmed anime cels against a photograph of a real background (the forest).

I've only taken a quick glance at this episode because of it's animation-on-photographic background technique. I wondered why they did this (inspired by Mary Poppins?)

Glad to get the Jeffbert perspective on this! :D

Hoo hoo hoo hoo, seems like Atom realized what he said, whatever it was. :D I'm sure it relates to the subject at hand, and he's not entirely mistaken when pointing it out. Ochanomizu has quite an impressive shnozzle, if I do say so myself.

So far, this guy seems to be the boss--

--until this guy comes along.

Image
The nearest I could find to this guy's appearance is "Doriyo Bosatsu"; more on him: TENGU WHO BECOMES A BOSATSU -- Daiyuzan Saijoji (Soto Zen Temple)

Those bombs exploded & goop covers our hero.

The sheets that flow from the Tengu's sleeves are ITTAN MOMEN (supernatuaral cloth strips). --http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Ittan_momen

In case you forgot, Robot Tomson can see through things.

The apparently supernatural things are now revealed to be technological.

Though I learned a bit about Japanese ghosts, I am still scratching my head about this episode. As near as I can figure, Wamsa (the guy in the costume) was swapping the real (gold) Buddhas for fakes, & selling the real ones to Hamegg; I do not know how Lamp was involved, though.

What a minute, was this guy really a robot? After being socked by Atom, he seems to have a few loose screws.

Yeah, I think all but the one guy were robots, Tetsuwan Penguin.

Well, excluding Hamegg and Lamp.

Actually, he seems seriously confused by something. I guess Jeffbert wasn't the only one left scratching his head... :3
