Watching it on the channel counts as a sale. You're giving them viewership.
"AprilSeven" wrote:and we don't actually have a "complete" episode to look at.
There was only one line of dialogue missing at most. Less than 10 seconds.
"AprilSeven" wrote:I would suggest that it is highly unlikely anyone here has any intention of "selling" these {flawed} recordings.
Selling is irrelevant when talking about piracy. Offering for free hurts sales of future DVDs. There is zero doubt that people at YTV and Tezuka Pro would not approve episodes on YouTube. They can perfectly ask Channels to disable their stream during the Robot Atom slot. You guys take big risks on everyone's backs and I don't like it.
"AprilSeven" wrote:AND Channels is offering the live stream on YouTube . . . this seems to be a quite different situation from people posting episodes right off of a box set for anyone to view.
That's like saying recording a show on TV and uploading it online is legal.
Quite a different pace on here compared to ANN where they didn't even take any risk and removed my link to the official stream outright.

I think AprilSeven is thinking of the SonyBetamax case that involved recording over the air TV broadcasts.
It's a gray area, true enough.
In this case I have little doubt that our making this show more widely known would help, not hurt future sales of any DVDs.

Nah, sharing recordings is not a gray area. Especially online.

Sharing clips like what I did helps the show getting known just as well. But ultimately, what we do doesn't help anything. For one, this won't come out on DVD here, except maybe by Anime Sols. In that case it's a 1,000 copy run no matter what. Basically all real sales the show will get will be in Japan from people who've seen the show air whenever it gets around to being aired there. But people elsewhere are less likely to import a copy if they got the episodes downloaded already. Same for Japanese people who know English.
Although I thought I made it clear that the most important was to play nice so we keep our stream every week. I mentioned DVD sales just to put you into the publishers' shoes. But everyone likes to pretend that everyone including content creators LOVE piracy.

I would agree that we shouldn't post links here to recordings posted on youtube.
The 'gray area' I was referring to has to do with the fair use issues of recording a 'broadcast' off the air, and legally Channel's youtube stream could be considered a public broadcast. That's the reference I made to the Sony Betamax case. (I have NO idea how copyright laws apply in the country of origin, Nigeria in this case).
The enthusiasm that our group has for this show will get out of hand at times, and people will want to share. While you are correct legally, the difference between watching the stream live vs a time shifted copy posted on youtube doesn't amount to much (especially if the copy is taken down within a short time). I'm not trying to justify piracy here, I just don't think that term fits what is actually happening, at least as far as our members intentions are concerned.

You don't say. Piracy is a crime. i say it's good that we could just leave the stream to the show.

Our members should certainly know better though.
What do producers think when they see complete episodes on YouTube? That a complete series torrent will pop up as soon as the series is over and will spread everywhere. Please don't make them think that. I'd like the stream to remain entirely functional.
In passing, I also think that even if moderators feel no guilt over these things, they should at least moderate them anyway to avoid this kind of discussion taking place, and to be seen as professional.

while I don't really glorify piracy, or tell others it's okay, I have noticed often animes get brought to America because lots of word of mouth gets made about them and that tends to happen because of online circulation. I know most animes I never would have even known existed let alone wanted to buy officially if they weren't fansubbed and circulated online through... various means.
But, to get back on topic...
I did finally get to see an episode. (Astro goes to space) Got to say it's amusing to say the least. Obviously not meant to be taken very seriously. Astro amuses the hell out of me. So energetic, so naive, it's so cute! XD I hope to see more of this.
