Although Astroboy was aired in Japan in the evenings, unless I am mistaken, F. Ladd & Co. were under the impression that it was to be a Saturday morning show. Thus, with parents present, some elements were appropriate; however, in their absence, those same elements may have been deemed as inappropriate. A show that was intended for syndication was subject to broadcast at the local station's discretion. I think it does seem inconsistent to show Tobio's demise in #1, but be too squeamish for the narrator to speak of death in #29. However, perhaps the editors felt that to evade the subject in #1 would require too much cutting, while in #29, it was only a matter of the narration.

While Cybotron speaks of Astroboy, there is more than one Astroboy series, & there are several manga styles as well. there were comics written for 1st & 2nd grade students, there were the Shonen (Boys') comics, & there were the newspaper (Chronicles), stories. These categories were very different in their dealings with violence & death. Compare manga vol 23 with vols 6-8. Tezuka himself never wrote Astroboy manga that was targeted at a broad audience, but rather was made interesting & appropriate for the particular readers.

Do not try to tell me that the stories in vol 23 are as violent as those in vols 6-8! nyaah!

In regards to the anime, the three series were designed for broad age groups, but each was made with the values of that present time. The machine guns were dropped not only because they were too old, but probably their location had something to do with it. Likewise the refuelling port was located exclusively inside the chest panel, & before that, the energy cassettes replaced the fuel hose, and its notorious location. Perhaps this was done to accomodate the American audience.

There is no one Astroboy. There are several, & each differs from the others in certain ways & for certain reasons.

When the movie comes out? Only a complete void would want to put out an Astroboy movie devoid of Sex and violence and death... And Demons.... From hell.
As I said the battle for control of the Robot Boy continues....

I throw you back the compliment. When did I say I wanted to reinterpret Tezuka's work? I only spoke about talking about some topics at the correct age for a given audience. You on the other hand, want to see this and that. You are in fact the one to reinterpret Tezuka's work.
Let's take an example you'll like: La grande vadrouille (original article in French). It happens during France's occupation by Germany during WWII. I saw this movie when I was a child, without knowing anything about the atrocities of WWII. When I grew up, and learnt about that, I saw the movie again with a new eye, and could find all the references that I had missed as a child. Do you think it was mandatory for my parents to explain me (as a child) all the atrocities of WWII at the end of the movie, only because there were relations between them and the movie? I learned about that when I had the correct age. No need to rush.

I suppose I should know better than to attempt any rational argument with Cybotron. Nevertheless, I will attempt to make clear that I have argued against your position on

1. The idea that there is only 1 Astroboy (series or comic)
2. the appropriateness of content based upon the viewers' age

I have prefaced that by stating the difference between the syndicated vs network broadcast, about which your response (as usual) has nothing to say.

Today, my dear Jeffbert, nothing is being syndicated or even broadcast because people like you ruined it! It departed from the original formalae that the Sensei created for it. The Sensei invented the Action cartoon anime upskirts shot in order to attract boys. The 80's episode could not make the cut into US pop culture.
Perhaps they should break this forum up into a juvenile section, and a serious anime section, that would solve the problem. That way those with Juvenile mentallity, and emotional developtment won't be exposed to discussion concerning the REAL Astroboy.. Which is a product of the ADULT MIND...
