That made me curious. I tried to find a definite answer, and from what I can see, every site with such codes has a "do it at your own risks" warning, but I couldn't find any occurence of any such problem, so it looks like they write this to protect themselves. The one exception to that rule is in the first review of the Toshiba on Amazon. Weird. But I couldn't find any other example.

Personally, I would go for the cheaper region locked DVP5140 and unlock it myself.

I'd like to go with the cheaper one, but then I'm afraid that when I try to unlock it I'll break it or it won't work... Uh, is there a good chance that it would work?

Well...

Yahoo Group on the Philips5140

Thread on VideoHelp.com

All of which have the same instructions that can be found at Amazon.

So, it seems like it worked very well for many people so far with this particular unit.

If it were me, I'd go for it.

Oh, one more question...

I'm not sure if my t.v is PAL or.... or whatever the other one was, compatible. I know it said that for the region free Philips it didn't matter if your t.v was compatible or not, but I'm wondering, does it matter with the dvd player that ISN'T region free?

You are looking into the Philips DVP 5140, right? It says on the official website "Video disc playback system: NTSC, PAL", which doesn't make it clear wether it's about the disc or the connection to the TV, to me at least. It says the exact same thing for the Philips I currently own.

However, all the TVs are NTSC in the US and Canada, and selling in the US a DVD player with a PAL option for which one would need a PAL TV to be able to play those DVDs just doesn't make sense.

If you have doubts, why don't you go to a local retail store that sells that player and ask them the question? :)
