Raymond "Ray" Harryhausen (June 29, 1920 – May 7, 2013) was an American visual effects creator, writer, and producer who lived in London, England, from 1960 until his death in 2013. He created a brand of stop-motion model animation known as "Dynamation."[3]

His most important works include the animation on Mighty Joe Young, with pioneer Willis O'Brien, which won the Academy Award for special effects (1949); The 7th Voyage of Sinbad, his first color film; and Jason and the Argonauts, featuring a famous sword fight against seven skeleton warriors.

I remember watching Jason and the Argonauts back in 8th grade. I don't remember the details of the movie very well, but I remember thinking how good the animation/visual effects were for a movie from its time.

For 1963, the visual effects in that skeleton fight are pretty amazing:

I never really knew Ray Harryhausen, but after reading up on him, I realize just how influential he was. At least he lived a long, fulfilling life with many accolades to his name. May he rest in peace.

I remember seeing "Jason and the Argonauts" back in the theaters in 1963. It is one of my favorite fantasy films. Mr. Harryhausen made some of the best sci-fi/fantasy films of all time. Other of his films was the adaptations of classic sci-fi authors like Jules Verne ("Mysterious Island") and H. G. Wells ('First Men in the Moon") Along with "Earth Vs. the Flying Saucers"; "20,000,000 Miles to Earth" and the classic "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms". Of course he is probably best remembered for his Sinbad movies and the original "Clash of the Titans."
RIP! Ray Harryhausen! You gave this Puerto Rican from New York many afternoons of entertainment with your fine flights of fantasy!

I think BLACK SCORPION was has final animated figures monster film. I like the part where the scorpion, which is large enough to swallow the man whole, take the time to sting him first.
