The only M$ software I ever felt worthy of pirating was Flight Simulator.

Is Open Office compatible with Windows 8? I'll need a good word program for school which is coming up in a few weeks and I really don't relish the thought of using word pad for assignments.

I also don't relish the thought of spending over $150 dollars for Office 2013 (that's WITH a student discount at my school).

libreoffice witch is a fork of openoffice, the free document foundation did that after oracle bought sun out of fear that oracle would kill openoffice like they did to open solaris, anyway it does work on win 8, atleast that is what a person said in response to a question an other win8 user asked
libreoffice system requirements.

Can I run LibreOffice on windows 8 64?

libreoffice is the defacto continuation of openoffice for all the linux distros, and it does run well on windows, or anything else that can be called a computer operating system for that matter.

anyway try it and see, let us know how you make out and good luck, both with open/libre office and your schooling.

I decided to just get OpenOffice from Apache and I am very grateful that it works very well on my computer :)

Thank you everyone that was helpful in helping me through this frustration.

I just put two books about the GIMP on hold at the local public library. I've been fooling around with the program a bit and I want to learn more about it. I've already discovered how to combine parts of images to make something new, and how to create animated GIF's, (I know motion JPEG's should also be possible.) I'd also like to create some of those 3D sterograms, you know the kind that if you look cross-eyed at you can see a hidden image? I think there is a plug-in for that.

That's pretty cool. I've heard good things about GIMP but I've never used it myself, being a traditional artist and all. I really am awful at digital art. :(

In general anything that you can do with Photoshop can also be done with the GIMP, although the user interface and command sets are not the same. If you learn on one and try to transition to the other the learning curve might be steeper than just learning how to use one program in the first place.

I never used Photoshop, I've been using Linux on my home computer since the mid 1990's and the number of good open source programs available is such that I've rarely had need for Windows.

There are a few engineering programs put out by the chip makers that require windows. Some of them can be run under Wine, others not. I do presently have a copy of windows on my computer, but I now run it under VMware AS a Linux program rather than dual boot. This is slower than running Windows natively, but on a Quad-core 3.5Ghz AMD processor with 12GB of memory I can live with it to run a single windows program.

I may get GIMP one day if I ever get back into editing manga again (I used to 'work' for Mako Scans, a scanliation site). I used a bootleg copy of photoshop that my brother put on my old computer to do that editing so I guess I'm a little experienced in the program.

As for computer operating systems I stick to what I know, so I'm a windows user but I've heard such good things about Linux and Macintosh as well (it's great for artists, digital anyway). Windows 8 is really annoying me though and I hope that this new 8.1 is better. I got an alert saying that I can update my computer to the newer version for free when it is available and thus got a starter pack waiting for me to download. Not sure if I will though.

I'm thinking that if windows doesn't stop being for lack of a better term lame I may go to some other system. I'm not adverse to learning new things.
