The thread is still there.
I guess each post is stored in a separate file and linked in a database.
So this could be a database problem?

Not sure how it works in this forum, but in phpBB nothing is stored in files, that is not beyond the database. All the posts are stored in database tables, which in turn are stored in big files. Keeping a file per post would be terrible because of
data clusters (which means that storing 1 character or thousands costs the same space).
If I had to guess, I would say that we suffered a few days old backup restoration.
