112, Samson's Hair
112, Samson's Hair
i FORGOT TO CORRECT the aspect ratio on this one.
Anyway, the title itself suggests why Fred Ladd rejected this one; yes, robot Samson is given a haircut, which sealed the fate of this ep.
Solar Energy brings the robot Samson to life.
Atom shows him around town.
But Professor Ochanomizu, seems uneasy, he thinks there may have been some detail he had overlooked.
"Hmm, I know I forgot something, but what?"
So, thinking it may come to him, he takes a walk, & being preoccupied with thought, bumps into Higeoyaji.
Atom & Samson had been in the mountains, as darkness fell.
But, more importantly, the full moon rose! I suppose it was bad enough to have a robot named Samson, & it should have been easy to give him a different name, but when he goes nuts at the sight of the moon, etc., the episode was doomed.
This foreground image was used in more than a few episodes, but here, it is heavily darkened. Can you find in it?
By the next day, Samson has recovered his sanity.
But, with much damage to the town, people are up in arms
With this guy, whom my notes indicates, is named Beal Tsukishi as the trouble maker, who leads a maddened crowd.
So, Ochanomizu takes Samson to his own home, in hopes of shielding from moonlight until he finds a solution.
These two robots will together transform into the truck below.
Atom has been searching for Samson, though without knowing the language, I do not know if he found him here. But the bad guys will follow & will find him.
The truck, as previously noted, is both those other robots.
Learning of Samson's abduction, Ochanomizu-hakase has no choice: he must take the ultimate action.
"Do it."
Atom even save the guy who caused the second round of trouble.
I guess making this story a seeming combination of Hebrew myth & Wolfman's story was what doomed it for exclusion. By this time, Ladd had no doubts that there would be plenty of other episodes that otherwise would have been excluded because they were in the 3rd season, so he could afford to be picky about which ones to use.

Having been sick for the better part of the past month, I missed this entry - another gem from Jeffbert - Thank You!!
Too bad this is yet another yet-to-be-translated episode - I'd love to know why robotic hair of a particular length would drive Samson mad when exposed to the light of the moon! Dr. Tezuka sure had one heck of an imagination.
Kinda makes you wonder what kind of bedtime stories he told his kids!!
