138, Long Day

This episode is the ultimate example of the Bank System; it borrows clips from no fewer than 7 episodes, some of which are rather long.

We open with a clip from 094, Angel in the Alps (English: 085, Angel of the Alps):

Perhaps these next two were actually made for our current episode:

Back to Angel:

Little Clara ('Curala') will be a major character in this current episode.

Notice the angel on the locket.

Back to original cel(?):

original cels:

The story, as near as I can figure it, involves worldwide climate disruptions, causing weather patterns not in accord with the seasons.

This next cel comes from W3 episode #04, Camphor Tree Story:

The inside of Clara's locket; I am certain the face is different from the one in Angel.

This is the title thing from W3 episode 4.

Also from W3, #4.

More borrowed cels, this one is from 061 Space Parasites (-- --):

065, Brave Escapee (56, The Terrible Tidal Wave):

Borrowed from 122, Monster Mantler (--, --):

I am guessing that this one comes from General Atom:

019, Astro Boy vs. Garon (Cosmic Giant):

038, Disturbed Small Planet (The Asteroid Menace):

119, Flying Lens (English: 102, Planet 13):

038, Disturbed Small Planet (The Asteroid Menace):

This one has been used too many times to tell its origin with more work than it is worth:

121, Ganimate (103, Prisoners in Space):

Clara's papa in this episode.

In 121, Ganimate (103, Prisoners in Space), Atom & Ochanomizu were adrift in the largest or closest of these wrecks.

Alps, again:

New foreground, as this guy was not in Alps.

I wonder how many people actually noticed this reusage of film when it first came out in the 60s.

I would not think too many viewers would, SOPikaMeowMeow, because I carefully watched the episodes several times, & as is apparent, captured many stills from each. Thus, I was able to directly compare the content of one with another. As I understand it, in Japan, the series ran its course without showing any repeats of episodes. People may have had vague feelings they had seen a scene before, but I doubt anything concrete.

Don't forget that they can also reuse the cells by combining them and overlaying new backgrounds, and also reverse the cells too. I'm sure Tezuka also used the traveling camera technique that Max Fisher used in Betty Boop.

Ah I see. That's very interesting how even back then they could do such cool things with animation.

Is it just me or does that look just like the Star Trek emblem?

I have seen that mirror image technique used on several occasions, kscharf, & the foreground-background one is common in this series. The images I used in this thread are only a tiny fraction of those in the episode; that is, where I speak of borrowed cels, often they represent clips ranging from less than a second to several minutes. The ones borrowed from ANGEL IN THE ALPS as an example, Atom flies through a forest, cuts down trees by the score, builds a fence to stop the avalanche, etc., though here, I included only one cel from that sequence.

"[T]raveling camera technique"? I ought to know about this, but other than attempting to visualize it, I am stumped.

Strange Wings: yes, it does bear a strong resemblance to the Federation logo. :p
