New Astroboy anime coming?

Postby Takao » 6 years ago

Japanese entertainment trade publication Bunka Tsushin reported on September 22nd that Tezuka Productions is currently developing a new Astroboy anime. Unfortunately, the site requires a subscription to read the full article so all you get is a vague title. Is it in reference to Little Astroboy and Astroboy Reboot? Is it something entirely unrelated? While a lot of Japanese bloggers shared the news, none of them actually gave out details.

They are referring to the new Little Astro Boy series. Bunka Tsushin posted about the 2018 Little Astro Boy series in a Facebook post on their official page. Although it's not brought up by name, they mention the new adaptation being targeted towards preschool children, which LAB 2018 is the only upcoming Astro Boy adaptation in which that's the case (Astro Boy Reboot is being geared towards young elementary age children). The first bullet point brings it up:

海外プリセールス続々決定、日本の営業も開始へ
手塚プロが「鉄腕アトム」新作TVアニメを製作

◎ In collaboration with France and with preschool children as the target audience, Tezuka Pro creates a new "Astro Boy" TV animation. Overseas pre-sales are being determined one after another [edit note: I believe this is referencing the multiple overseas Astro Boy adaptations] with business in Japan also beginning.

Ah, thanks.

The overseas pre-sales bit refers to Little Astroboy having found international broadcasters and merchandise licensees. Tezuka Productions is now focusing on Japan.
