The Lying King

Postby Tetsuwan Penguin » 4 years ago

It's disgusting that we'll never see an English release of the last 'Kimba' anime because of Disney. The company had the balls to issue a 'cease and desist' order against Tezuka productions over the release of that film which came out at the same time as the Lion King.
Maybe Japan should have followed the lead of Grand Fenwick in 'The mouse that roared' and have declared war on the US.

That's a bit extreme of a reaction in regards to an animation dispute....

Of course I jest. If you'd ever read Lenard Wibberley's books you'd have gotten my joke.

Never heard of him.

Wrong forum; should be in

And be careful making jokes like that, Penguin. I don't think anyone here but you understands it.

Yea, I think Jeffbert, April7, and myself are the only members old enough to have ever heard of "The Mouse that Roared." You young "wippersnappers" couldn't appreciate the joke.

The "Mouse that Roared" was one of several books by Lenard Wibberley written during the cold war days following WWII. They were about a fictional country only a few square miles in size located near the Alps boardering France. The only source of income for the country was the export of a highly praised wine. One day an American wine maker started to market a counterfeit version of the Grand Fenwick wine, and the country soon found itself in financial ruin. In desperation, they declared war on the US, hoping that we would defeat them, and then pour millions of dollars in aid to them, hoping to keep them from being taken over by the communists. However their plan backfired, after several months of the US ignoring their declaration of war, they rented a ship and attacked the US. Grand Fenwick's Army was only equipped with Medieval style weapons, the Longbow, and suits of armor. Their army arrived in NYC during an air raid drill, and they stormed the laboratory of a scientist who was developing a new atomic weapon, the "Q" bomb. Grand Fenwick captured him, and the bomb prototype, thus winning the war against the US. A war fought over the theft of their "I.P." So I saw the humor in the Lying King situation here.....Substitute Japan for Grand Fenwick (can you imagine an army of Medieval Samurai warriors
attacking HollyWood?)

 Mouse on the Moon was disappointing. :D

I have no idea how small nations could even exist, especially if next door is a large much less expansionist nation. Aside for the cutting and slicing that occurred after the word wars, & the dissolution of the USSR, how could they even come into existence, much less have any duration?

Back to topic: I would think that Tezuka Co. should easily defeat Disney in court since KTWL existed decades before Lion King. I guess they decided it was not worth the trouble, but such a huge market!

So how is it, that both made new versions at about the same time?

Disney have a long history of taking other stories and claiming them as their own, and they're extremely litigious. They're the ones responsible for the extensions of copyright duration. Disney don't have to win against Tezuka Co, they just have to extend the litigation process using their vast resources and drain Tezuka Co of money. Despite their often beautiful movies, theft and lies are in the company's DNA.

The interesting thing to me is people who reduce the argument to "They both just copied Hamlet" or "Just because The Lion King has a rocky outcrop it doesn't mean anything" while ignoring all the other evidence and Disney's outright lies. There are some weird levels of obsession with Disney and I think it's from children growing up with Disney movies and being unable to separate the corporation from their positive childhood experiences. To criticise Disney is to attack their childhood selves and their identities on which it's based.

There actually are two countries smaller than the fictional "Grand Fenwick". Monaco, is the second smallest country in the world. The world's smallest country, is of course, the Vatican.
