I doubt you'll be able to find this now, but it was mentioned awhile back that Sony of America helped fund the project from day 1. They were also had major content control of what could be shown or what not. The information probably is somewhere on the net, just rotting from old age...

Ah, okay. I thought you meant the go ahead was in the hands of Sony America. I'm pretty sure the Japanese don't need help from America to make anime, but it makes senses if the quality we ended up with was a result of additional American funds.
I, too, would trade animation quality for less censorship. I wonder if the Japanese were angry that Sony America restricted them so much, then ended up not even screening the whole thing.

Right now I'm going to watch the trailor.
"Astro, you must exceed the limitations that humans cannot!
You must be go beyond nationality, ethnicity,
pilosophy, and religion,
starvation and poverty,
and war!
Exceed these limitations created by man!
You must fly high! Higher than any human has ever flown before!
To reach for the future that no human has been able to so far!"

The Korean DVDs were subtitled in English, but they only released 23 episodes over there (you need a region-free player).
The rest was never fansubbed.
A lot of people are going crazy over the 2005 movie but there's sadly nothing we can do, it was never released outside of theaters.
And please don't revive buried threads. There are newer ones you could use, or make one yourself.
I'm on Twitter.
