I thought it was a bit of a stretch to make a mere energy source override a robot's nature, whether it was designed as a child replacement or for a combat role. Of course, it may seem silly to over analyze these things, but if we can assume that robots such as Orrin are designed with redundant layers of protection against going haywire, we should assume that a robot weapon would naturally have even more redundancy. But even if not, I think it is one of those dumb plot elements that too many movies have. This is one plot element that I really dislike; it is clearly more fantasy than Science fiction.

I watched the extras, & found myself wondering why I had thought this was made by a collaboration between the Japanese & Americans. There was no mention of any Japanese contribution to the making of this film, other than the licensing issue. Why else would there not have been a Japanese sound track on the DVD? :astro:

There's a scene in the excellent Astro Boy-based comic Pluto where:

SPOILER SPACE

Astro is killed, then is revived by Dr. Tenma. Tenma manages to do that by inserting a strong emotion - in this case, hatred - to level out all the other emotions fighting for dominance inside Astro. (A highly-sophisticated robot that can't choose a dominant emotion out of its programming will never "wake up" - become a conscious being. Too much data paralyzes a robot's programming.) At first, it looks like Astro will never be the same - he's quick to anger, to say the least...but in the end, he recovers himself. I think it's logical to think that the Astro in the movie would behave similarly.

Which manga was that one in?[/QUOTE]

It's from Naoki Urasawa's retelling of the Pluto/Greatest Robot on Earth episode of Astro Boy -- They're afraid Astro isn't gonna make it -- and when you read all of what Tenma did to him (and try to image what it would be like to experience that) it's very gripping and hard to get you mind around.

I got the impression from things I read on various sites that the movie was more of an Imagi/American production (Imagi being based in Hong Kong), with Tezuka's son working to preserve the integrity of the characters/story. The red core/blue core thing was a bit corny for my taste. Guess it was a way to build in an easy to understand good/evil core (pun intended) to the story line.

I liked the blue core/red core idea. It clearly delineated positive force from negative in technological terms (and the cores looked cool), and the blue core helps explain why Astro is so amazing. In the manga, one got the idea that it was because he was so technologically advanced. The Blue Core adds a certain mysticism to that idea - and makes him special. Otherwise other Astro-like robots could be built, and I like the idea that Astro is one-of-a-kind.

but he's still able to place his own power source into other bots (ZOG) which is neat in its own right. Although I wonder how they'd place in the Omega factor.

Well, Tenma would never put the red core inside Astro. Unless the blue core was destroyed and he had no choice (Say a disaster was going on, and even then he might be pushed by someone then, or done behind his back.)

It really also depends on if Astro was activated before hand too. If he has his personality already in place, then inserting the red core might be a constant battle of the mind and body for Astro to control himself.

He'd easily becomer carried away with his strength, maybe contining to attack foes long after they are defenseless and no longer a threat with the senseless intent to kill them rather than disarm. Perhaps even risking human lives getting hurt in the process, say if there were civilians around he wouldn't try moving the fight away from the area or wouldn't watch where he's firing his arm cannons. (BAM, nuuu you shot my leg! BAM, aaaaaa! you shot my other leg! what did i ever do to you!?)

Astro would most likely need support of a friend, say Tenma or Cora, to keep him from remembering who he is and stop him going out of control.

Personality wise, Astro might be more short fused, quick to get angry and frustrated (even becoming sarcastic and taunting his foes) he'd struggled to cling onto that good heartened nature inside him.

If this were on Astro birth after Toby died...NO WAY! @_@ Tenma would never ever use the power source that killed his son in the first place, he'd only ever ask Elefun for the blue core. After putting all those weapons on Astro that'd be a big mistake asking for the red core lol.

So yeah I think there'd be a constant fight for Astro to remain himself, something I'd rather like to see in a fanfic, FREAKIN DO IT GIRL! XD

Here's some pics i cooked up, i dunno, maybe they'll help you for inspiration ^_^
