054 Duel on the Alps

On the very first episode of the second season, Tenma has gone mad greiving for Atom; he wants him back, & will stop at nothing to get him. He hires Skunk to abduct Atom's family and hold them hostages. He intends to destroy them unless Atom returns to him.

However, once he sees the love they have for each other, he abandons his attempt, leaving a letter for Atom, stating that he is giving up, & (I assume) that he will never harm them again.

I know of only one mention of Hoshie Tenma, the mother of Tobio. She appears in volume 7 of the manga. Note that volumes 6-8 are basically one large story (chronicles of Astroboy), that was published in a newspaper, and contained darker material than the comics published in kids' magazines. Hoshie Tenma adds a truly tragic element to Atom's story, read if you dare. B)

I read those when I was in Chicago. Considering I was really tired and it was really late, I really freaked out! I remember me walking in the hallways of the hotel, and this lady came down the hallway from the middle of nowhere. I'm glad I couldn't see my reaction! :wacko: Anyways, those were quite sad. Like

She's in the story Dr Tenma, which is a variation on The Birth of Astroboy. (volume 7)

***SPOILERS***

At the start she tells Tenma to spend more time with Tobio, then she gets the call that Tobio's been killed.
After Tenma builds Astroboy, Tenma's wife has trouble accepting him as a replacement for her son. But she looks after him and gives him Tobio's room.

She is in the next story The Tragedy Of Bailey. Astro finds out he is Tobio's replacement, so he tries to act more like Tobio for his mother. Tobio's mother teaches him things Tobio did. When Tenma finds out, he gets really angry that his wife doesn't accept Astro as a robot and is trying to make him more like Tobio. He burns Tobio's photos and toys.

In the next story, Astro Goes To The Circus, Tenma's wife tries to convince Astro that he's human. Tenma treats Astro badly. After Tenma sells Astro to the circus, he shows his wife the contract to show he's gone. Tenma's wife gives him a contract of divorce in return. She tries to see Astro at the circus, but they won't let get backstage. Later she has a heart attack and asks to see Astro before she dies. Astro finds out about his mother, but the circus bosses lie to him about her condition saying she's fine. She dies without seeing him again.
