I wonder if that was because the 03 series was done without Tezuka?

Hmm. It might have been. I also remember watching something on my 2003 box set in the extras that the creators of the 2003 Astro Boy and representatives for the USA production worked together to find a comfortable balance in the story that would work for both nations.... Not sure if that was a good thing. I remember seeing one of the Japanese writers being asked by one of the Americans "Why does this story have to be so sad?!" and the Japanese replied with "Because it's Astro Boy! It's always been sad!"
Not sure if their presence had anything to do with the amount of destruction though... It could be that both parties just wanted to focus more on story...?

In the 1963 Anime Atom was NOT upgraded to one million hp. That would have happened in the TGROE episode (116-117) but Tenma does not appear in this story (he does in the manga).
So Atom is no stronger in the 63 Anime than in either of the others, hence my claim that with the arm cannons the 2003 Atom is the strongest.

Hey there we really appreciate all the feedback we have received, this is our most popular episode yet!!!
As for us using a fully powered Mega Man, a few others believed it was unfair he had all his weapons but it was agreed that even if he was restricted to 1 weapon from each main game, he would still win since he has insane physical strength & cheap abilities ntm he can dodge attacks from Duo who has a ftl travel speed. However, the fight would have been less visually pleasing.
2003 was the incarnation we were most familiar with, and it also came off as the weakest to us. He fails to push back giant robots that other incarnation would likely have no trouble with and he fails to stop a falling satellite among other things. He also is more prone to damage from what we saw of the other versions. He does not even have the machine guns in his butt, but we gave him those guns since he uses them in the game Omega Factor.
We were actually considering doing composite Mega Man VS composite Astro Boy, but composite Mega Man is so overpowered the outcome would still be in Mega's favour, but it would be a fight in the same way Bruce Lee beating a comatose old lady to death would be a fight.
As for the fuel source thing, we were aware he only gets oil inserted in his butt in the manga, but the joke was irrestible to use, you must understand. Once again we are very appreciative of your feedback and take care!

The story writers did seem to tone down the 2003 Atom somewhat. He is drawn more child like here than in '63, and isn't shown as being as powerful. In '63 for example he actually ripped a building in half, and carried the upper half away! (Wacky/Mad machine) That episode may have actually been the most extreme example of brute strength Atom ever showed....However, in 2003, his arm canon blasted away half a mountain! (at least in the manga made from the series). I think the 2003 Atom was just too fearful to actually USE ALL of his power!
BUT, I can't see Atom and Megaman ever fighting, at least not each other. I can better picture them joining forces against some greater evil, and I'd like to see THAT theme in a video game!

Exactly! I can't ever imagine them fighting each other for any reason (unless one had their AIs essentially hijacked or something). They would totally be best friends.

There was a manga based on the 2003 show??? His finger laser did slice through a cliffside but he never did blow away 1/2 a mountain.
Of course Mega Man and Astro Boy would most likely become friends, but considering the nature of our show it had to end in a fight to the death. Proto Dude is such a huge fan of both he would definitely buy a cross-over between them the day it came out, he is already purchasing the Mega Man & Sonic comics lol

In the manga it was the arm cannon not the finger laser that sliced away the mountain. I just checked my PDF of the first volume. If Astro's aim had been different it's clear he could have taken out the whole mountain. There's no way the earlier versions of Atom could have done that without physically smashing into the mountain again and again.

Every incarnation has an advantage. Weak points as well, but the all the incarnations have something that he does best. So, I suppose, in a way, none of them is weaker. Some more advanced, definitely, but not weaker.
I just said, Atom looked like he was weaker in the 80's version, but I think he was beat up a bit more.
