Astroboy in Lego
Yup.

"Astro, you must exceed the limitations that humans cannot!
You must be go beyond nationality, ethnicity,
pilosophy, and religion,
starvation and poverty,
and war!
Exceed these limitations created by man!
You must fly high! Higher than any human has ever flown before!
To reach for the future that no human has been able to so far!"

Not as much as you'd think. It's a fun medium to do a sculpture like this, but I've only bought half a dozen regular sets in the past 15 years. I feel like a fish out of water with all the new shapes they introduced during the years I thought I was "too old" for Lego.
I have a decent amount of sets from when I was little, I used to play Space Lego with my brother a lot.

I'm up to his arms.I've done a horribly messy rough draft, a few rebuilds and I'll have it right. And I had a large shipment come in from Budapest today so I've got a few more pieces to work with.

What do you expect the height will be when completed?
I'm building him to 1:1 scale. The height I've found recorded on official merchandise is 135cm (4'6"). So far he's a metre tall (3'3"). He has a big head.
Interestingly, it looks like it will take around 35kg of lego, which is also his official weight.
I'm on another contruction pause at the moment. I have enough lego to finish at least one arm, but I have breaks for up to a few months between bursts of creative enthusiasm.
Also, the arms are really hard to do.

I couldent do what your doing in a million years
Sure you could! If you're still in school then money might be a problem, but it's only ever one brick at a time.
You start by drawing what you want to build (like on graph paper) then assemble it following that pattern. (Of course, I have to dismantle and rebuild a lot with mine. I draw each layer when it's done.)
I'd recommend starting by building a large scale lego brick out of lego. You know the generic red 2x4 bricks? Try making one of them 32x64 big, so the "studs" on top are about 8 wide.
These guys have inspired me a lot:
Eric Harshbarger
Henry Lim
They go into detail about how they build sculptures and have lots of photos. I learnt from that. The stegosaurus and the harpsichord blow my mind. The Princess Mononoke sculpture inspired me the most to build Astroboy.
