Hi there,
Has anybody finised watching the whole 11 DVD's in the Astroboy Tin Box? I'm up to volume 8. And I can tell you I like them alot. I can remember some that the A.B.C put on TV in the early or late 80's (I can't remember its that long ago and I was too young at the time.) But there are some episodes that I don't remember that were on tv. I have saved the Bonus DVD to play last. I hope I finish it before Xmas. I got it for $189.00 and I think its money well spent.

Thank's for reading

:) B)

Are these the same as the few eps shown on Kids WB & Cartoon Network?

I don't really know how the episodes ran on cartoon network. I don't have pay tv and the only time I saw it was on free to air tv here in Australia. But the DVD's are running in the japan TV running order.

These eps are the same as shown on ABC TV, however the video quality showing on the Madman DVDs is second to none compared with what had gotten aired by ABC.
The VHS tapes by Siren Visual contained the same minor video as shown on ABC TV, a nasty 'ghosting' effect appears throughout every episode due to poor NTSC to PAL convertion.

None of this 'ghosting' is visible anymore on the DVDs as Madman had used the original japanese master tapes.
The colors are bright, the frames are clear-cut..., well, it's a pure joy to watch them like this after all this time. :)

Like I said earlier, the extra DVD is a real jewel.
If you watch the DVDs with the regular episodes right now, save up this extra disc as a desert to watch at the end when you've finished watching all eps. ;)

I've managed to watch the whole set already (I've spent most of my weekends watching Astroboy episodes since I bought the tin box).

It's an amazing set, and the quality is excellent. I must admit I watched the 'extras' dvd first (i already owned all the eps on VHS so i was curious to see the bonus stuff) and the extras are a real treat for all Astro fans, especially if you've ever wondered about the 'missing episode'.

I now feel quite releived that I have the complete set of the Astroboy series I grew up with, and in such great quality too. Now all I have to do is complete my Monkey Magic dvd collection.. :P

I got the tin box too and almost had an overdose watching Astroboy episodes all the week-end :D
This is trully a jewel as Strange Wings said. I already had the totality of all episodes in English, and I definetely don't regret having bought the tin box. Madman did a great job, and the only thing I find sad is that it will be limited to 10 000 samples... there won't be for everybody :(
Now it would be a great idea if Madman did the same thing for 1960 and 2000 episodes :D

Well I know they are "Strongly considering" doing the 60's series. I mean they even have the first episode of the 60's on the extras disk in the box, with a little note saying words to the effect of "Comming soon".

They can not do the 2k4 series as it is already released by.. er.. Sony(?) I think. So far volumes 1-6 are in the stores here in Oz. I would assume the complete set will be released eventually. If after the whole set us released they offer some soert of "complete pack" or something I Might consider getting it, but right now I just don't like the 2k4 series enough to collect it per volume.

heh. Go Aussie! Go Aussie! :)

Madman has been very good to us I think. THey is an awful lot of stuff available in r1 and r2 that we can not get here yet, but if not for madman the Anime / Manga industry in Oz would ba FAR smaller than it is now.

Plus we got the Astroboy tin box and you havent! :P

(Sorry.. could not resist.. I am bad..)

Mine just showed up...hehe, Christmas eve, perfect!

Now, there's this immediately question that I know people like Jeffbert can answer. Why was the whole Atlas story removed from the Western release? Was it thematically too dark for US censors (Atlas does kill his creator after all), or was it that Atlas takes up nearly as much screen time as Astro, nearly stealing the stage away from him?

Either way, it seems a mistake. I've only watched the first 6 episodes or so, but this part of the plot seems crucial and removing it a really bad call.

EDIT: Oh I should add, huge thumbs up to Madman for putting this out. Yes, the set is expensive, but it is also everything it should be. The only thing possibly lacking would be Japanese versions of all the episodes, but that clearly isn't realistic here (for several reasons) and maybe not even possible. Nonetheless, Madman seems to have included everything you miss out on seeing the western version--short of the original voices. Plenty of extras, a nice tin and a helluva nice book. Never mind you actually get to see Tezuka himself (for a few seconds anyway). Big thanks are certainly in order...
