What's the deal with cels anyway?
What/Why do people get them anyway?
Are they used for anything?
That's what I'm trying to figure out.
It's like buying a painting to hang on your wall, only you might not put it on the wall. Just another form of merchandise. (Think of those life-size Star Trek cardboard characters that some people have)
I thought they were completely pointless for many years, now I'm a little more interested in them. Especially after seeing on in real life. They're painted on a sheet of clear plastic from the reverse side. Which means they can speed things up production by painting over the lines into alread-painted areas. It's very interesting. You also get to see the ragged edge that never makes it into shot.
Most of the cels in a production aren't of any use to collect or sell because they're minor. Like if someone blinks - that's just another cel overlayed with only the eyes drawn on it.
There's a classic moment from The Simpsons when Bart buys an Itchy & Scratchy cel and gets this:
Needless to say, cels that capture the moment the best are worth the most. I think you usually get the original sketch with them, but generally not the background.
Hi there all...Im Back....MISS ME>>>LOL...anyway, yeah, I bought a black Jack cell from this guy as well and they are great. I think its kool to see how they paint them up... Plus, you have a peice of the show's history. I think they are a great investment if you can get a really good quality peice.
