That's "Mu" from Osamu. It's literally 'insect'. I think Tezuka loved insects so much that he decided to write his first name with 'mu' for insect instead of the character that is traditionally assigned to the name Osamu.

It really does look like a little bug though, kanji is like that sometimes. The characters will look exactly what they mean.

Oh yeah, now I see it! Tezuka must have drawn his signature vertically, but it was done so quickly that it didn't look like his usual printed name. The eyes are also drawn as slits instead of dots which confused me. As I said, the seller at that auction claimed it was a hand drawn doodle that Tezuka sketched up quickly at a fan's request at some convention or something. IIRC it sold for a heck of a lot of money!

I love Astro's "school boy" pictures. I guess that's from 2003. When I was a kid we schleped our books around in attache or brief cases, or just put huge rubber bands around them. Today's kids use back packs, I guess that fad started in Japan too at the same time.
