That purely depends on your opinion. I personally prefer the new series but there are some here that would disagree with me

I have seen all 3 versions & read the manga. The manga was filled with physical humor, and the B&W (1960s) version was most faithful to that type of humor. I liken this physical humor to the type that was featured in the very old Looney Toons, MGM, & Disney B&W cartoons that were shown in theaters. Often the humor had absolutely nothing to do with the stories, and was more or less a filler for cartoons whose stories were just too short.

But, anyway, this humor was Tezuka's very style; and as he was more involved with the B&W than with the 1080s series, it shows. In fact, he had very little involvement with the 1980s, & because he died in 1989, no involvement with anything after that date; hence, the 2003 version had almost no humor.

However, each series does have its own merits.

That is ONE issue with the new series. I do think it tried too hard to take itself too seriously

Agreed. Take Metropolis, for instance. I have not read the manga for a while, but being familiar with Mitchy, I know it contained a good bit of humor; however, Rin Taro's anime version was VERY DARK despite being based upon the manga. I think this film influenced the 2003 'Asutroboi' series as much as the previous versions of the stories it featured.
